Tahsis

Follow the "Tree to Sea Drive" from Gold River to Tahsis where you will find the starting point for lots of outdoor fun. You will be treated to excellent salt water fishing and the opportunity to land some of the largest salmon and halibut caught in B.C. Located right in the heart of spectacular Nootka Sound, Tahsis Inlet, and the surrounding Rugged Mountain Range, this area is becoming well known for underwater dive sites, sea kayaking, caving, hiking, birdwatching and wildlife viewing.

Tahsis is a friendly community where adventuresome travelers can access the bays, islands, channels and historic sites of Nootka Sound, or set out into the surrounding hills and valleys to view the eagles, bears, elk, and other wildlife that share the surrounding rainforest. In the past few years the region has become known as the ‘Caving Capital of Canada’ due to the vast networks of underground caverns that have been discovered in the nearby hills. The longest cave in B.C. Is Thanksgiving Cave at 3.4 miles. Among it’s inhabitants? De-pigmented trout!

Tahsis has a full service marina and boat launch that provides services to private boaters heading into the rich fishing grounds of Nootka Sound. The annual fishing derby that takes place August 16 & 17 draws anglers from all over Canada, the USA, and even Switzerland. They compete for thousands of dollars in prizes. Past winners hauled in salmon that tipped the scales at over 40 lbs. Always interested in outdoor activities, local residents and visiting hiking enthusiasts take part in the Great Walk every June. This walkathon is one of the toughest in North America. It starts in Gold River and winds through the mountains and valleys 70 km/ 42 miles to Tahsis. Surf’s up! An enterprising local outfit now offers guided surfing expeditions to the long sweeping beaches on the Pacific side of Nootka Island, or other secret locations along the outside coast. With steady waves arriving daily from Japan, and no crowds, the west coast of Vancouver Island is becoming well known as a hot spot in the worldwide surfing community.
